Chikamasa B-500SR: Bare Stainless on a Curved Tip Strip away the coating and the B-500 design shows its bones: a curved blade of heat-treated Japanese stainless on a soft orange grip. No fluorine layer sits on this edge, which is the one thing separating it from its coated sibling. The blade is 35 mm long on a frame of 155 mm, small enough to work bud by bud with two fingers and a thumb. Its curve rides the outside of a flower, so sugar leaf comes off close without the point digging into the calyx. Chikamasa grinds the outer face of each blade round. That rounded spine can brush past finished flower, fruit or a grape cluster without scarring the surface. The grip is elastomer resin moulded over an internal steel core, soft against the skin but rigid under load. A tightened stainless rivet keeps the pivot true and resists rust, while a cushioned stop softens every closing stroke. Chikamasa, based in Sakai since 1910, makes this pair in Japan. Curved Blade Garden Scissors Without the Coating Bare steel is the honest trade-off here. Resin sticks to it sooner than to a fluorine blade, so plan on wiping the edge every few buds during a sticky wet trim. A jar of isopropyl on the table and a second pair in rotation keep that from slowing the session down. In exchange there is no coating to wear through, and light honing on a fine stone costs nothing but a little steel. Many trimmers keep this pair for dry trim, where resin is less tacky and the uncoated edge stays clean longer. It also earns its keep outside the flower room, thinning grape clusters, deadheading and snipping herbs. The curved tip covers more surface per pass than a straight blade, which speeds up the final manicure. It gives up some reach in tight crevices, where the slanted B-500SL gets in more easily. There is no spring, so your fingers handle the opening stroke, which some hands find steadier on fine work. Keep it on leaf and small stems and off woody branches, which dull a fine tip quickly. Key Features Curved Japanese Stainless Blade: The curve follows the round of a bud, so close manicuring takes fewer cuts and less wrist rotation. Uncoated Edge: Bare heat-treated steel has no coating to wear through, and it takes a light touch-up on a fine stone. Rounded Outer Blade: The outside of each blade is ground round so the spine can pass finished flower or fruit without scarring it. Steel-Core Elastomer Grip: Soft orange elastomer over an internal steel core stays comfortable while keeping the pair rigid. Cushioned Stop and Stainless Rivet: A soft stop takes the shock out of each close, and a stainless rivet holds tension without rusting.
