What Makes These Clay Balls for Plants Work
These are expanded clay pebbles, fired from 100% natural clay until each ball puffs up with a hard shell over a porous core. Grade runs 4 mm to 16 mm in the same bag, so the mix settles with gaps between the larger pieces.

These are expanded clay pebbles, fired from 100% natural clay until each ball puffs up with a hard shell over a porous core. Grade runs 4 mm to 16 mm in the same bag, so the mix settles with gaps between the larger pieces. They are pre-washed and extremely stable in both pH and EC. That stability is why they get used as an inert medium rather than as a soil. Nothing leaches out of them and nothing locks up inside them. The 10 L bag ships at 4.75 lb, and the code on it reads 5034517150250. Structural strength is the spec that separates a good pebble from a poor one. These hold their shape instead of crumbling, which is what keeps clay dust out of a dripper line. A crushed pebble turns into silt, and silt is what blocks emitters. Free draining is the other half of it. They hold no excess water, so the voids between them stay full of air and the root zone stays oxygenated. The outer surface is rough and porous, which gives beneficial bacteria somewhere to colonise.
Running Clay Aggregate in Flood Tables and DWC
A small bag of clay aggregate is the size that gets reached for when the job is a few net pots at a time. Expanded clay does its best work where water moves past roots rather than standing around them. In a flood table the pebbles fill the pot and the solution rises and drains back through them. In deep water culture they hold the plant upright in the top of the basket while the roots hang below. On a drip feed they spread the emitter output sideways instead of letting it channel straight down. Aquaponic beds use them for the same reason, with the bacterial surface as a bonus. They also work as a mulch on the surface of a potted plant. A layer on top slows evaporation and makes it harder for fungus gnats to lay into wet compost. Mixed into a medium, the maker suggests four parts clay to seven parts coco or soil. That ratio opens up a dense mix and gives roots somewhere to run. Rinse a new bag before it goes into a system, because even pre-washed pebbles pick up fines in transit. Between runs they can be washed, soaked and used again, which is the part that pays the bag back.
Key Features
100% natural clay: Fired expanded clay with nothing added and nothing to leach.
4 mm to 16 mm grade: A mixed size that settles with air gaps between the pieces.
Pre-washed: Comes out of the bag with the bulk of the production fines gone.
Stable in pH and EC: Nothing in the medium shifts the reservoir chemistry as it sits.
Resists crushing: Holds its shape, so it does not turn to silt and block emitters.
Porous outer surface: A rough shell gives beneficial bacteria a place to colonise.
10 L bag: The size for net pots, top dressing and small builds.
