A training tray is essentially a weight placed directly on the seeds during germination. Growers often call this the “blackout and weight” method. When seeds sprout under a tray resting on top of them, a few things happen: The roots anchor properly. Without weight, many seeds (especially large ones like peas and sunflower) push their root against the medium and lift themselves out. The tray holds each seed down, so the root drives into the medium. Stems thicken under resistance. Plants respond to mechanical stress by building sturdier, thicker stems. Botanists call this thigmomorphogenesis. Lifting the tray is a gentle version of that stress. The “weight-training” description is partly marketing, but the effect is real. Germination is more even. Every seed is pressed against moist medium at the same depth, so the crop comes up at a uniform height. That makes harvesting much easier. It doubles as a blackout cover. Darkness and trapped humidity speed up germination and encourage the stems to stretch upward. Once the seedlings are strong enough to lift the tray noticeably (usually after 2–4 days), you remove it and give them light. They then “green up” by producing chlorophyll.
