Chilli Costa Rica is a visually striking, mid-to-high heat pepper renowned for its dark black foliage. This compact beauty begins with green leaves that transition to striking black. Purple flowers adorn the plant, leading to glossy black fruits maturing into warm orange pods. Ideal for container gardening, these foot tall plants are popular as ornamental and edible additions. Heat range is similiar tp the cayenne pepper, making it quite spicy but not as extreme as varieties like the habanero.
Key Details & Varieties:
Appearance: Distinctive foliage that transitions from vibrant green to black, making it a popular ornamental, often called the “Mona Lisa” of chillies.
Culinary Use: Known for a hot, slightly salty, or tangy, fruity flavor, ideal for sauces, salsas, and, in the case of Rocoto, traditional rocoto relleno. Experience a delightful interplay of light sweetness and saltiness in the Chilli Costa Rica Orange, enhancing the overall flavour profile of your culinary creations.
Growing: Thrives in pots or as a garden border, prefers warm conditions (26–30°C for germination), and is generally easy to maintain. Easy to grow, high yield, rare.
Seed-starting – Step-by-step guide
• Seed Preparation:
Soak seeds in lukewarm water for 12–24 hours to encourage faster germination.
•
Planting:
Fill seed trays with seed-raising mix and plant seeds 0.5–1 cm deep. Lightly cover and mist to keep soil moist, not waterlogged.
• Germination:
Place in a warm, sunny spot (22–30°C). Seeds typically germinate within 7–21 days. Keep soil lightly moist.
• Transplanting:
When seedlings reach 5–7 cm tall with two sets of true leaves, transplant into larger pots or the garden. Space plants 40–50 cm apart in well-draining soil.
• Care:
Provide 6–8 hours of sunlight daily. Water regularly but allow soil to slightly dry between watering. Feed with a balanced fertiliser every 4–6 weeks.
• Support:
Stake plants if needed once they begin producing fruit.
•
Harvest: The pods are often thick-walled and turn from black/green to deep red or orange. Harvest with scissors or pruners to avoid damaging the plant.
